    Shame on me for not remembering this.

    But the original issue of 549 dealt only with leading nulls.

    I think the following discussion talked about embedded nulls as well.

    549 did not talk about other nonprinting characters at all.

    But I think we know what we want:

    ASCII 0 to be converted to space,
    all others to print as is.
